Baluchistan

The Province of Sistan & Baluchistan has an area of 178,431 sq. km. The northern part, Sistan, covers only 8,117 sq. km (4.5%) of the province, while Baluchistan is much larger. These are in fact 2 separate regions that are joined together to ease the administrative work. The districts in the province are: Zahedan (the centre), Zabol, Khash, Saravan, IranShahr, Nik Shahr, and ChahBahar. Sistan & Baluchistan has borders with two neighbouring countries: Afghanistan and Pakistan. To the south, the Sea of Oman connects the region to International waters.

Sistan was called the land of Nimruz, and has been home to some of the bravest people of Iran. The land owes its name to an old civilisation living in the area some 3,000 years ago, called the Saks (Sakistan was gradually changed to Sistan). In Avesta, the ancient holy book of Persia, the region is referred to as Zaranj. This is also where the legend of Rostam was born. He was the greatest Pahlevan (strong man) who ever lived in the region.

Baluchistan is also an ancient & historical land. It became one of the biggest satraps of the Achaemenid Empire during the reign of Dariush the great. In Shahnameh, Ferdowsi calls Baluchis the biggest part of Keykhosro's army. The province has some splendid historical sites, such as the ruins of the burnt city (believed to be over 4,000 years old), and the Sassanid castle on Khajoo Mountain. Another magnificent beauty to visit is the legendary Mount Taftan, in the vicinity of Khash. Taftan is an old volcano that is geologically still active. Hamun seasonal lakes in Sistan also offer some of the best natural sceneries in the region. Unfortunately, the drought in recent years has almost vanished 2 of the largest lakes.

Baluchis and Sistanis are hardworking, hospitable, and friendly set of people. The hype about the drugs activities is just fabricated lies. Although a small group of armed smugglers operate this dangerous and devastating trade through Pakistan and Iran, their numbers is insignificant compared to the rest of the province. Baluchis are famous for needle works, pottery making, basket weaving, carpet weaving, Kilims and handicrafts.

Burnt City (Shahr Sookhteh)

One of the most intriguing Archaeological finds in Eastern Iran, burnt city is the remnant of an ancient civilisation going back some 3000-4000 years back. The unexpected appearance & the quick disappearance of the city baffled experts for years. Located south of the city of Zabol in the Sistan region of Iran, its proximity to lake Hamun can be explained easily. But this is a notoriously hot region, it is vulnerable to raids from any direction, & there doesn’t seem to be any other civilisation anywhere near it. So why build a city in such a place?

Italian researchers discovered the place in the early 20th Century. Judging by the artefacts recovered in the area, the inhabitants seem to have been a race of intelligent people who were both farmers & builders of various crafts. So far no military ware has been discovered, suggesting the peaceful nature of the residents. What is really strange about burnt city is the fact that it has no connection to any other old civilisations in the area, as if it completely came from elsewhere. Current work by Iranian researchers should soon clear some of these ambiguities & solve some of the puzzles
